The two ministers are in Sri Lanka to press demands for a ceasefire in the government’s war against Tamil Tiger rebels. ‘Mr Miliband is not a representative of the civilised world, he is a representative of terrorists,’ a monk shouted as police kept a close watch on the hundreds of demonstrators.

“I would like to know what the solution is?” asks Dr Sam Pari, a youth activist. “Sri Lanka believes it is a Sinhala state and has never wanted to treat the Tamils equally. Isn’t the deliberate targeting of Tamil civilians proof enough that an independent Tamil state is the only solution?” she asks.

April 29, 2009 Comments Off on Australia sends $4.5m of taxpayers money to Sri Lanka
An article in today’s SMH says – Australia boosts Sri Lanka aid by $4.5m
Which organisations assisting displaced persons will receive the millions? How much of this will fall in the Sri Lanka government’s hands?
Australian Foreign Minister, Mr Stephen Smith stated that a further $4.5 million worth of financial assistance would be given to Sri Lanka with the bulk of it going to organisations associated with assisting displaced persons. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organisation for Migration would get $1.5 million each, the Red Cross would get $1 million and an Australian-based NGO would get $0.5 million.
However, for some-time now Tamils in Australia and elsewhere have heard stories of systematic rapes within the so called ‘welfare-camps’ the government has locked Tamils up in.
We have pleaded for these atrocities being done to our people to be heard. But these allegations have been dismissed as “Tamil Tiger propaganda”.
Finally an article has appeared in a US publication Talking Points Memo (TPM) saying the
As well as this Times online has published an article which says
The Australian government must take accountability for its actions in Sri Lanka. $4.5m of taxpayers money is being sent to put Tamils in concentration-camps and rape our women. Why is the UN supporting this? Why is Australia supporting this?

April 29, 2009 Comments Off on Sri Lankan Govt, LTTE need to live up to their words: US
Washington (PTI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been in touch over phone with Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, the US said, even as it asked Colombo and the LTTE to “live up to their words”.
“I know the Secretary (of State) in recent days spoke to the Indian Foreign Minister Mukherjee. There have been lots of phone calls going on about the situation,” State Department spokesman Robert Wood said here, confirming there has been highest level of contact between the countries on the issue.
“We’re very worried about the humanitarian situation on the ground. We have called on both the government and the LTTE to live up to their obligations.
“They’ve said certain things… the government saying it would not engage in further combat operations; the LTTE said it would not carry out other military operations. They need to live up to their words,” Wood said.
Earlier, the Sri Lankan Government said though the combat operations in the northern war zone have ended, troops are continuing a sweep to bring about a “total defeat” of the Tamil Tigers in the quarter-century old insurgency.
It said the operations were aimed at rescuing the remaining 15,000-20,000 people still held hostage by the LTTE.
Wood said the US will continue to work diplomatically to try to get the two sides to cease military activities and allow people caught up in the conflict to get food and medical supplies that they need.
